What Is Love?

Nov 17, 2019    Kent W. Clark    Sermon Highlight, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, Ephesians 4:32; 5:1-3, John 4:11; 15:13

The Beatles sang, "All You Need Is Love". If they had been singing about God's love, there would have been a grain of truth in that statement. But what usually goes by the name 'love' in popular culture, is not authentic love at all; it's a deadly fraud, far from being all you need.

Paul set straight, the Church of Corinth; their beliefs became heavily influenced by pagan tradition. Much like the Church of Corinth, our society, even as it exists within the Church today, has perverted the definition of love. That word is often tossed around with little to no foundation to support it.

The Bible models love after God's selfless love for us through Jesus Christ, who gave His life to save His people from their sins. That is our standard.

We ought to love other people as God has loved us. God knows about all of our sins. God knows how badly we fall short. Yet God loves us with an everlasting love and forgives us of our sins against Him, over and over again.

True love is always sacrificial. True love doesn't think about self. It's not narcissistic. It's giving, it's self-giving, it's merciful, compassionate, sympathetic, kind, generous, and patient.
